While ballistic helmets stop bullet penetration, the underlying shell deformation may cause skull fracture and underlying brain injuries. The BLSH assesses the risk of blunt head trauma from ballistics strikes and other types of blunt loading such as from less-lethal ammunition and direct head impacts. The headform is mounted onto a flexible neck and contains force sensors on the skull at five locations to measure contact force, distribution and impulse in order to assess injury risk. It is available in three sizes and a force verification system is available to ensure system operation. The headform is a recommended test method by AEP-2920.
