Mouth guards are used in sports and other activities to protect the teeth, gums and soft tissues in the mouth against impact damage. There has also been speculation in the past that a mouth guard might offer protective benefit against mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). To investigate this latter claim, in conjunction with the NFL, Biokinetics developed the Mandible Load Sensing Headform, which can fit a mouth guard and measure full head acceleration impact kinematics. Biokinetics also has test equipment to measure the ability of mouth guards to absorb energy between the upper and lower dentition, using a vertical impact machine installed with metal dentition and a force gauge. While no standardized, impact oriented test method for mouth guards presently exists, we have the ability to assess the materials and protective designs of mouth guards under dynamic loading events.
